In laymen's terms, it's how your web site is optimised so it is found via a search engine. And let's face it, you want your web site to be found, right?
In real terms, there is a whole lot more to it: Keywords, meta-data, backlinks, content, site age, "Authority" and even site security (SSL) can have positive, or negative, impacts on your web site ranking and search engine results.
So bringing all that together, it is the way the major search engines return your site in their results page, based on a number of metrics, which we know about and can change in a positive way.
Fortunately, the major search engines explain to us techies how they work. All we need to is to optimise your website to ensure you tick more of their boxes.
We do this by running analytical reports against your web site, comparing the results against the search engine metrics, and against your competitors site if you wish, and then fine tuning your site until it gets as high up each search engine metric as is possible, and higher than those of your competitors. That is the simplified version.
It's not as straight forward as that unfortunately. An athlete wouldn't just train once and expect to win the Olympics, and your web site is just the same. It doesn't need a daily training regime, but it should be reviewed on a monthly basis to ensure the metrics are still high, and equally as important, that your competitors haven't upped their own game and gone above you in the rankings and results pages.
Plus there are some things that we can control and some things that we can't, or that are very hard to change. The age of a web site, i.e. how long it has been live on the internet (its D.O.B. if you like), is one of the metrics used and we can't really change that. There are also things like Domain Authority, which are made up of several metrics (40 actually) which are difficult to individually control, yet will react positively to any kind of optimisation. The more optimisation, the higher up the Domain Authority ladder you go, and in turn, the higher up the rankings and results pages you go too.
However, in the green box at the top of this page we have shown you proof that it can be achieved. But it is down to team work, and you play just as an important role in this as we do.
